Morrow Bible Church was established in 1983 under the leadership of Pastor Marvin Gassman, who served with the Ohio Bible Mission as superintendent of Peniel Bible Camp. His vision was to establish a separated, Bible-preaching church in Morrow County that was faithful to the whole counsel of God.
The journey began with a Bible study in October 1982 at Pastor Gassman's home with the Jim Page family.
Regular services commenced on May 1, 1983, growing from a small group that included the Gassman and Page families.
All rejoiced to see the work God was doing, and much thought was given to the need for other facilities. This hunt led to our present building, which had been abandoned years earlier by the United Methodists when they consolidated with the Sparta church. In the fall of 1987, inquiry was made and a purchase price of $4,000 was agreed upon.
By Easter 1988, the congregation moved into the newly acquired building after extensive renovations.
The church invested in various renovations, including storm windows, insulation, and a new heating and air conditioning system. Church members undertook projects like refinishing pews.
In 1999, Pastor Gassman resigned from Peniel Bible Camp to focus full-time on the church.
In 2001, seeing the need to plan for some additional expansion, the church was able to purchase three- and one-half acres of land adjoining their property on the north.
In August of 2004 construction began on an addition to provide a new foyer, two new class rooms, an office, much needed larger restroom facilities and an elevator for handicap access to both the upstairs sanctuary and the downstairs fellowship hall. By the Lord's grace this was completed and paid for by August of 2005.
The completed addition was planned to facilitate both the old building and a new sanctuary that could be added at its north wall. The Church is looking for the leading and provision of the Lord before taking this next step.
Stephen Howard served as a summer pastoral assistant in 2005 while still in college at Bob Jones University. After finishing his seminary training, he came back to the church for a two-year internship in 2011 with his wife Jenny and six-month old daughter, Lillian. He later was called as assistant pastor.
In 2014, Pastor Gassman announced his retirement at the end of that year. The church voted to call Pastor Stephen Howard as Pastor and Pastor Gassman as Pastor Emeritus. This change took place in January of 2015.
Under Pastor Howard, the church has continued community outreach and improved sound and video equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic. His wife Jenny and four daughters all have taken and active part in the ministry serving as a family. He has sought to teach and preach God's Word to edify the saints and encourage them to not forsake the assembly of the saints.
In May 2023, Pastor Gassman was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, resulting in paralysis. He required full-time care and resided at Good Shepherd Home in Ashland, Ohio.
Pastor Gassman went home to be with the Lord on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025.
Morrow Bible Church is known for its warm congregation dedicated to walking in obedience to the Lord. We rejoice in the steady growth and lives transformed by God's grace. We pray that Morrow Bible Church will continue to glorify God and serve the community until Christ returns.
